Signs of the Times: How Packaging Machinery Stats Jumped in 2011 and Why You Should Be Part of These Stats

For business owners, manufacturers, and entrepreneurs, new interesting statistics may give you more reason to invest in your own automated carton sealers and taping machines.
Updated statistics show that shipments of packaging machinery in the United States rose by 19% in the previous year.
Perhaps the increasing demand for automated systems or the necessity of cutting costs due to the recession both have something to do with this increase, but the bottom line is, the demand for automated taping machines and other types of packaging systems is increasing. More and more companies are jumping into the bandwagon, proving that automated packaging is the way of the future.
According to PMMI’s 2012 Shipments Study, shipments of U.S. packaging machinery peaked at $7.7 billion in 2011; this is 19% higher than figures recorded in 2010. Additionally, it was found that the local market also experienced a 23% climb to $8.8 billion.
What didn’t change was how the market was – or is still is – distributed. It is interesting for packaging business owners to note that food packaging still accounts for the highest demand in the market. It makes up 36% of overall packaging demand, and is closely followed by beverage packaging at 24%. Together, the two categories make up almost 60% of the sales in the packaging market. It is also interesting to note that the food industry takes the backseat when it comes to blister packaging, skin packaging, or vacuum forming packaging, which were found to be more in demand in the medical and pharmaceutical markets.
These additional details, however, don’t change the fact that while several markets continue to struggle, the packaging industry seems immune to the economic downturn. This further proves that automated packaging is one of the wisest, most practical business investments that business owners like you can make at this time.
More Expansion Opportunities
Aside from the taping machines and sealing systems, two other closely related markets have experienced a rise in 2011.
The first is the container manufacturing market, which rose to $760 million of revenue in 2011. This may give you an idea of what the bigger companies are also investing in. This market involves machines that are used to convert materials into containers.
The second is the coding, printing, marking, stamping, and imprinting market, with sales reaching up to $520 million.
Why Invest in Automated Packaging?
All these newly released statistics tell you one thing: automated packaging systems are becoming more useful and are now being increasingly incorporated into businesses. Since innovativeness and an ability to adapt to the changes in the market are both key factors in ensuring business success, it will certainly pay to also consider investing in your own packaging systems. And given the rapid rate of improvement in packaging technology, packaging systems nowadays do more than just pack; they also pack faster and more efficiently, thus improving their ROI.
So if you’re in the middle of expanding your business or you’re thinking of ways through which you can retain a competitive advantage or catch up with your competitors, the improved productivity and reduced costs that come with automating your packaging processes should be enough to convince you.

New LED Packaging Technology Discovered: Packaging And Performance That Goes Hand In Hand

The packaging industry is a tree of many branches, but it cannot be denied that some branches extend further faster than others. The LED packaging technology is one such branch because it has no choice but to move beyond the technology used in automated carton sealers and taping machines. LED technology has become one of the most prominent technologies as a result of an increased awareness of energy efficiency, and many researchers have willingly risen to the challenge of packaging this technology safely for global distribution.
Packaging that Does More
Their efforts have most recently led to the development of a new way of packaging LED that not only protects it during transport, but can also boost its performance. The new study, which was conducted by researchers in Taiwan, have discovered that a unique flip glass substrate used for packaging LED has demonstrated several key improvements in LED performance several aspects of LED performance.
Currently, most LED products distributed commercially are packaged using PLCCs or plastic leaded chip carriers, PCBS or printed circuit boards, and ceramic holders. These packages are partly non-transparent to make sure the LED light does not penetrate through the sides.
The new LED packaging technology recently discovered in Taiwan, however, moves away from this design and instead uses side walls made of fully transparent glass substrate covered with phosphor on the outside. It then has a cavity created to house the LED; this cavity is filled with silicon whose role is to protect the LED. When the LED has to be used, the packaging is simply flipped over so that the LED light can be emitted through the transparent glass.
Benefits of Newly Discovered LED Packaging Technology
Wider viewing angles. According to researchers, this latest discovery in LED packaging can provide a wider viewing angle of 140 degrees, compared to the 125-degree angle offered by 95% of conventional LED packaging used nowadays. This improvement is caused by the LED light’s penetrating through the side walls, thus reducing reflection loss – a common problem caused by non-transparent packaging material.
Better uniformity of colors. This new LED packaging technology has also exhibited better uniformity of the angular correlated color temperature. This is what determines the coolness and the warmth of the LED light. Due to its lower maximum deviation of just 1300 K compared to the 2500 K of other LED packaging materials, the color uniformity is improved. According to researchers, the phosphor coating is the reason behind this.
Improved quality evaluation and assurance. This new technology also allows producers to test the LED and the packaging separately before they are fitted together. This means that they are better able to identify flaws in production that may lead to color quality problems. This can help reduce the waste levels and the errors during fabrication.
This new LED packaging technology is not yet out in the market, as researchers still have to improve the material’s transmission and perform more tests on its reliability and heat dissipation abilities. These aspects will also determine whether this packaging technology can be used for higher-power LEDs.
If you are a business owner supplying various LED products, this new development will be of great interest to you. Staying up-to-date with the latest packaging technologies can help give you gain a competitive advantage over other players in your industry.
Transporting and shipping would be another crucial consideration.  Buying a quality and dependable taping machine and acquiring an automated packaging system will help you in ensuring that products are handled well from the manufacturing side down to the market.

Importance Of Packaging: Product And Consumer Safety

Packaging is an essential tool of marketing.   It establishes the identity of a new product.  It also brands or positions the product to attract the right market that it wants to hit.  Moreover packaging also protects both your product and your target market or what you call the end consumer.  That is why it is very important to have an excellent packaging system to make sure that these objectives are met.  Having a high quality-taping machine is one way of ensuring that the product reaches the last line of the cycle.  This machine ensures that products are encased and sealed properly securing it for shipping and distribution down the line.
Recently, a news broke regarding a child in Vancouver grabbed a laundry pod causing him to lose his eyesight.  These new technology in the detergent industry is making its way to the market like a hot potato.  This little plastic bag-like square that hold laundry detergent is an answer to those who do their laundry and wants a quicker way of doing it.  These pods will make laundry easier.  With this laundry pods, you don’t have to scoop the detergent powder and you don’t have to redo your washing just to add the stain remover and the brightener.  These pods will save you time, it may not be substantial but accumulated over a year, it might be significant.
Are these pods safe to use?  Well these pods are designed for laundry but because of it s bright colors that are so appealing especially to children who likes grabbing small stuff that are colorful and delectable, this may pose danger to them.  Keeping those pods in higher places like inside your hanging cabinets or somewhere that your kids cannot reach would be a good way to store it.  If you don’t have any kids well good for you.  But an important consideration in packaging is that the product is not just presented well to the market but it should also ensure that product is kept safe especially when in the hands of the consumer.  Going back to these gel pods, yes it is safe to use it as long as it is kept safe from children.
These pods are shipped from the manufacturer down to the market and used by the consumer.  What’s amazing about this product is that it is heat resistant and it doesn’t melt.  Keeping it inside the box and sealing it through a taping machine will not affect the quality of the product.  It will only disintegrate once it is dipped in water.
Packaging of these laundry pods is truly a breakthrough in the detergent industry.  Imagine having three most important stuffs that you need while doing your laundry in one small plastic pod.  Nevertheless, even if the product has tremendous positive effects on the consumer, always make safety the top priority.

BestPack Taping Machines: Answering The Call Of Customization

Sometime in the third week of August, iNEMI released an announcement via Solid State Technology, that it is starting a new convergence project on semiconductor packaging equipment requirements, and is seeking input from the industry.

According to iNEMI, semiconductor packaging, equipment and manufacturing complexity have risen dramatically in the past decade. Integrated Circuit makers have increased their specific equipment requirements, but have not developed a consistent set of industry-wide requirements for precompetitive needs. The resultant “semi-custom” equipment set ups can increase cost and lead to integration or quality issues upon installation. Semi-custom packaging equipment cannot consistently meet common industry needs.

This is where BestPack comes in with an edge over competitors. BestPack offers custom made taping machines or packaging equipment and automation systems for its clients because packaging needs vary from one industry to another. Automatic taping machines or packaging equipment are great tools to optimize operational efficiency and reduce production costs. In addition to over ninety (90) models of both fully automated taping or packaging machines and manual taping or packaging machines to choose from that BestPack offers, the company is known for its engineering innovations and customization ability.

The objective of iNEMI’s project is to align Integrated Circuit maker and equipment supplier requirements and drive industry convergence in the following areas:

·      Equipment software automation
·      Equipment electro-static discharge (ESD) capabilities and test methods
·      Material handling systems (MHS) capabilities and test methods
·    Conservation efforts to reduce consumption (e.g., power, water, gas, etc.) and emissions (e.g., waste water, gas, etc.)

The project aims to develop a common set of requirements and targets that can be universally understood in the semiconductor packaging industry. It will also seek to define instrumentation specifications and methods to validate equipment requirements, and classify which types of packaging assembly equipment require which standards.

The International Electronics Manufacturing Initiative (iNEMI) is a not-for-profit, highly efficient R&D consortium of approximately one hundred (100) leading electronics manufacturers, suppliers, associations, government agencies and universities. iNEMI roadmaps the future technology requirements of the global electronics industry, identifies and prioritizes technology and infrastructure gaps, and helps eliminate those gaps through timely, high-impact deployment projects.

Export Packaging Options

When shipping a product overseas, the exporter must be aware of packing, labeling, documentation, and insurance requirements. It is important that exporters ensure that the merchandise is:

1.     Packed correctly so that it arrives in good condition; using a good standard taping machine greatly helps with this requirement;

2.     Labeled correctly to ensure that the goods are handled properly and arrive on time at the right place;

3.     Documented correctly to meet U.S. and foreign government requirements, as well as proper collection standards; and

4.     Insured against damage, loss, pilferage and delay.

There are a variety of options on packaging goods for export. Such materials include but are not limited to: wood, paper, metal, plastic, glass and commonly used textiles.
The main types of export packaging are:

Loose or unpacked – is only normally only applied to transport of such goods as heavy vehicles. Making sure they are stowed securely is more important than adding a layer of protective packaging.

Boxes or crates – that are securely sealed by carton sealers are the commonly utilized option. They are often stacked on pallets and shrink-wrapped for stability. Less durability is required if goods are also containerized.

Drums - usually made of metal or plastic are what are regularly used for transporting liquids and powders or goods that need to be kept dry.

Wrapping - often used with goods stacked on pallets, wrapping - such as shrinkwrap or foil - both adds to stability and protects goods.

Pallets - allow smaller packing units such as boxes and cartons to be grouped together. They allow easy mechanical transporting, which eases the process of loading, unloading and warehousing.

These options are not mutually exclusive, so you may want or need to use more than one.

Many markets abroad have waste regulations that favor packaging which can be easily recycled or has a minimal impact on the environment when disposed of.  Exporters must comply with The Packaging (Essential Requirements) Regulations that aim to minimize the amount of waste packaging businesses generate and ensure that packaging can be reused, recovered or recycled. If a business handles more than 50 tons of packaging in a year, they must also comply with the Producer Responsibility Obligations (Packaging Waste) Regulations

Basic Guidelines for Export Packing

When packaging a product for export you need to keep in mind the four major factors: protection, security, mode of transport, and cost. There are also considerations when it comes to waste legislation and special requirements when it comes to packing wood, dangerous goods, and food and other perishable goods.
Generally, items packed for export should be packed by a good standard taping machine, instead of being packed manually using human effort. The taping machine packaging adds to the endurance needed for the package to handle stress factors such as repeated loading and unloading, being unloaded in the rain and stored in the open, stacked, pushed, shoved, dragged, dropped, and processed on a conveyer belt or even sent down a chute.
Protection
One of the main purposes of exporting your goods is to avoid damage. Containers and pallets are primarily standard so that they combine efficiency with excellent cargo protection.
Security
Necessary steps need to be taken to prevent goods being stolen or tampered with. There are now available taping machines and packaging equipment with special anti-pilferage engineering that can help increase the security of your packaged goods. Shrink-wrapping and secure straps also act as deterrents. Export packaging should be kept as plain as possible - providing details of the contents, like brand names, encourages theft. Containerization helps with this, and using container seals makes tampering even less likely.
Mode of transport
How a product is packaged also depends on the destination and the method of transportation. For example, bulk ocean shipments of liquids, grain and ores don't need any packaging. And goods transported by air generally need less protective packaging than those sent by ship.
Cost
It is a false economy to try to cut costs by using sub-standard packaging. The standard options (like buying a good taping machines, cartons grouped on pallets and then loaded into containers) have become the standard because they are reliable. However, unless your goods require special care, you are unlikely to gain much by opting for above-standard packaging. You can buy, lease, or hire most types of packaging so it makes sense to shop around.

The Importance of Packaging in the Logistics Industry

What is the value of a simple taping machine in the large-scale of the logistics industry? The success of the logistics industry depends on the promptness with which the products can be delivered to a particular destination or to a client.
One of the most important aspects of the shipping process is timing. Consignees along with the supply chain are dependent on regular shipments of products in order to meet their own customers’ needs and expectations. The logistics services timeline actually begins prior to the shipment date and time, as pre-planned delivery schedules are provided to receivers and their clients so that they will be prepared to accept delivery.
Time constraints in the logistics industry would require high quality and reliable packaging systems to contribute to the efficiency needed to make a business in the industry competitive. BestPack offers the most diverse line of machines in the packaging industry with affordable, high-quality products that are built to last and proven to withstand heavy usage. Automatic taping machines are great tools to optimize operational efficiency and reduce production cost.
Location-wise, warehousing facilities and logistic facilities used to be situated in remote areas like water ports, beside rail tracks and other places not frequented by people. However, warehousing facilities have shifted to urban and suburban areas while logistic contact points have moved even to commercial centers primarily for the easy-access of potential customers. The logistics industry has experienced several changes over the years. These changes can be attributed to the growth in the retail and manufacturing industries as well as the transportation infrastructure sector. Deal flows in the transportation and logistics industry were robust during the second quarter of 2012, driven by mega deals in the transportation infrastructure sector.
Logistics is the management of business operations, such as the acquisition, storage, transportation and delivery of goods along the supply chain. It is the process of planning, implementing, and controlling the efficient, effective flow and storage of goods, services, and related information from point of origin to point of consumption for the purpose of conforming to customer requirements." Note that this definition includes inbound, outbound, internal, and external movements, and return of materials for environmental purposes.

Global Business and The Packaging Industry

The general public has little understanding of packaging and its relevance and impact to global business. The common view of packaging is that it is intended to influence the consumer or customer at the point of purchase – and that is its only purpose. Little or no attention is paid to the importance of packaging in preservation and transport of goods and products.
For instance, patronizing excellent taping machine brands help taping machine manufacturers increase their commitment to quality because they are motivated by the kind of returns that they see in their competitor’s business. Buying a good taping machine that fits the purpose and function of a particular product’s packaging needs ensures that the product is properly preserved from preparation to transport and distribution.
The retail industry and the automotive industry are driving forces in the selection and design of packaging materials. Both industries pay much attention to the consumer package, as well as the transport package because both are important in ensuring product quality and low cost distribution.
It is obvious in both the retail and automotive environments that excellence cannot be achieved in packaging selection if the designer or design team does not pay attention to the impact of packaging beyond the consumer level. For instance, transport package must be effective and efficient in the supply chain but in addition, aid in the assembly line. The personnel should not spend time opening packages and checking the product. They should be sure of grabbing the right product and installing it without worries about variations and malfunction.
The definition of packaging is “a coordinated system of preparing goods for safe, efficient and cost-effective transport, distribution, storage, retailing, consumption and recovery, reuse or disposal combined with maximizing consumer value, sales and hence profit.”(Paine, 1990)
That being said, promoting awareness of best practices in the packaging industry—not just on the aesthetic level of consumer appeal but also on the functionality, quality, and effective design of packaging—should be given more attention and importance by both industry movers, manufacturers, customers and consumers worldwide.

Importance Of Packaging To The Mobile Phone Industry

Who would have thought that mobile phones would be selling like hot potatoes?  Calls that were very expensive and limited are long gone.  It started when AT&T commercialized the first Mobile Telephone Service during the 1940s.  This gave way to 30,000 calls per week, which were manually operated by another person on the other line.  The first commercialized telephone equipment that they used weighed 80 pounds.  Imagine the hassle of holding it for a few minutes – it’s ike your talking on the phone while holding a 6-year-old boy using the same hand.  Today’s mobile weighs around 200 to 800 grams in an average and the box that comes with it is so small and lightweight.
Compared to the older models, these new designs that we have right now are not only used for calls but they have evolved to a whole new way of using a mobile phone.  They are now considered as a utility tool.  Its functions have revolutionized the modern mobile technology.  You can now use your phone for tracking, taking pictures, chatting and SMS, sending files through email and MMS and a whole lot more.
Mobile phones are indeed essential to our day-to day lives.  Who doesn’t have a mobile phone today?  According to some studies today, in the US alone there are 327,577,529 mobile phone users, which is only next to India and China.  In the UK, 85% of their population has mobile phones.  With this in mind, packaging has become more vital to the mobile phone industry.  With the growing demand for a mobile phone not only in the US but also around the globe, demand for better packaging also increases.  The demand for packaging systems such as carton sealers and taping machine will also increase.  The need to save on costs will play a huge role in acquiring this equipment.
So where does packaging come in?  To begin with, packaging plays an important role in marketing the brand.  Imagine Apple selling their iPhones but using an ordinary box.  It doesn’t make sense.  Apple sells elegance, functionality and leadership. Thus, packaging should also match the product image of the company.
Another benefit of good packaging is protection.  If you’re selling a product that is so expensive, you need to have secured packaging. This can protect all components while being shipped around the globe and stored inside the stores or distributor warehouses.
Lastly, packaging gives the consumer a sense of guarantee and security, assuring them that what they are buying indeed came fresh from the factory.  That is why it is also very important for a manufacturer to have a carton sealer and a taping machine to ensure quality of the product is not compromised.

Humorous and Creative Ideas for Advertising And Packaging

Packaging is rather a serious word.  But who said that life should always be serious?  Sometimes you need to add humor to make it more appealing and exciting.  Why don’t you try adding a little fun in your packaging?
Humor, if executed right, will bring success to your company.  Do it right and the product will fly high and will be remembered for a longer time.  We avoid being humorous in our advertising or with our packaging simply because we are afraid to fall flat.  Who wants to fall flat anyways?  Nobody wants to look like an idiot after getting humorous with a product.  But if you do it correctly and plan it carefully, this fear can be turned into an opportunity.
So how can one be humorous and at the same time hit the target market?  Let’s go through some tips and guidelines on how we can do it:
1.     You have to know your objective.
2.     Humor should be directly related to your product.
3.     Since you’re eliciting emotions when you’re humorous, then make sure that your humor is not a lie or something that is offensive to others. Consider the different races and cultures that you will target and make sure that you don’t say anything that is racist and discriminating.
4.     Conduct a focus group discussion and get some ideas from the outside – your potential customers.  They may have a better and bigger humor than those who work for you.
5.     During the group discussion, avoid analyzing the data too much.  Remember the reason why you are there—to be humorous.  Try to be casual with the idea.  If it’s funny, then it is definitely funny.
You can be humorous by just adding a few lines that would really tickle the imagination of the reader or you can also use images or cartoons to deliver the humor.  Have you heard of this:  On the packaging for a wristwatch:
Warning this is not underwear! Do not attempt to put in pants.
Funny and yet it sticks to your mind, right?  Some might say it is stupid but if you can deliver it right, it will create a mark.
Bestpack.com is a leading manufacturer of high quality taping machine and other packaging equipment that would fit your company requirement.

Protecting Your Produce With The Right Packaging

If you think that planting and harvesting your produce is the hardest part, well you’re mistaken.  Packaging and transporting is far more difficult and considered the most crucial stage of your business.
Increase your sales by keeping your fruits and vegetables green and fresh.  Packaging plays a vital role in maintaining the freshness of your produce.  There are different ways on how you can package your goods and maintain its original state for a few days. A produce undergoes different stages as well, which cand determine the type of packaging that will suit the environment.  Here are different types of packaging materials for different types of stages:
1.     Sealed Cartons/Corrugated Boxes – This type of packaging is used primarily when transporting your harvest.  It provides better resistance to damages when manually handling the produce during transportation to markets.  It also protects the fruits from scratching each other and damaging the skin to keep it looking fresh in the market.
2.     Vacuum Packaging – This is usually the standard packaging when fruits and vegetables are already displayed in supermarkets and grocery stores.  This will lengthen the shelf life of the goods by reducing the level of both oxygen and nitrogen in the package.  Some films would require micro holes to avoid anaerobiosis.
3.     Nets – This type of packaging is used for root crops and other vegetables.  These crops would normally require more holes because if humidity is too high or oxygen level is too low, such crops will sprout.
4.     Wooden Trays/Crates – Commonly used for potatoes and tomatoes.  These crates have good ventilation and are relatively resistant to different weather conditions.  It is also widely used in transporting larger sized produce like watermelons.
You can use carton sealers and dependable taping machines to ensure quality of packaging and handling of your harvest.
Packaging is not only to ensure longer lifespan and safe transportation of your produce.  It impacts your marketing and your sales.
Great Harvest + Right Packaging = Increased Sales

Significance Of Packaging

Packaging is a vital component of food processing operations and preservation.  From the factory down to the grocery stores, packaging is important.
An excellent packaging system will also be beneficial in optimizing and maximizing a company’s operational efficiency.  A top-grade taping machine combined with a high quality case erector and a durable carton sealing tape will do just that.
Aside from enclosing the goods for storage, delivery, display and sale, packaging also informs resellers and consumers of what’s inside the box.  It’s a way of marketing the product while on display.  The words or pictures displayed on the box may be informational, based on fact or mandated by the consumer law of a region.  One way or another, it is marketing put all together.
There are different ways of packaging a product.  One would be using corrugated boxes and another way is by using Styrofoam.  Let us start with the latter, the Styrofoam.  People misuse the word Styrofoam as a generic term.  It is a brand name and a trademark of The Dow Chemical Company for closed-cell extruded polystyrene foam.  This packaging is best used for insulation.  Corrugated boxes on the other hand are brown boxes made from corrugated paperboards.  These paperboards have these air columns that acts as a cushion and makes the box stronger.
Going back to the significance of packaging, another important marketing benefit of product packaging is branding.  It’s one way for a company to maintain consistency in their logo, color, product character and tag lines.  It plays a significant role in helping the consumer recognize and remember not only the product but most importantly, the company.  Remember that in this age of multimedia and mass communication, visuals are very powerful compared to audio communication.
An excellent packaging will definitely result to an excellent turnover.  Make a lasting impression through packaging and marketing combined.
